What Makes Strangers Feel Safe Enough to Become Community?

What conditions help strangers become less afraid of one another?

There are many festivals around the world. Music, lights, movement, escape. Bliss Boogie was never meant to be just that.

I've been sitting with a question lately.

What conditions help strangers become less afraid of one another?

Community isn't created simply because people gather in the same room. We've all experienced being surrounded by people while still feeling completely alone. At the same time, we've also had moments where a conversation with someone we had just met felt surprisingly genuine.

What makes the difference? I don't think it's about having all the same beliefs, interests, or backgrounds. In fact, some of the richest conversations happen across differences. Community grows through a collection of small experiences. It is one of the reasons we shifted to the summer of self-study and intentionally created smaller groups. When someone welcomes us without expecting us to fit in. Someone is genuinely curious about our story. We laugh together. We discover a shared interest. Someone respects our boundaries instead of pushing past them. We make a mistake, repair it, and realize the relationship didn't have to end. Little by little, trust begins to grow.

One of the things I appreciate most about relational practices is that they give us opportunities to experiment with these moments. We don't gather because we're expected to become the same. We gather to practice staying connected while remaining ourselves. Not finding people exactly like us, but finding spaces where we can be different without becoming disconnected. To stay present when big feelings of what-if start to ripple through us. What if I am too much, too different, not fun enough? What if I am not accepted by others? We can unconsciously abandon ourselves to fit in.

As we move toward this year's Bliss Boogie Summit and Day of Exploration and Adventure, this is one of the questions I'll be carrying with me. I'm less interested in creating another event than I am in creating the kinds of experiences that help strangers become neighbors, neighbors become friends, and friends become the communities that carry us through life.

What has helped you not lose the connection to yourself and move closer to others?

SOCIALS IN JULY & AUGUST

Curious, but still not sure? Come join us, ask questions, or just be a part of the connection.

Beyond Small Talk

July 12th, 1-3:30 PM AT HAVEN FARMS

Join us for an afternoon of tea, light snacks, and meaningful conversations. Inspired by the southern tradition of gathering to talk the day away. We will use thoughtful prompts to spark connections, curiosity, laughter, and reflection.

Whether you are making new friends or deepening existing connections, beyond small talk is an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of good company.

Potluck And Story Night

August 8th 4:30-7:30 PM 218 Snow Ave

Bring a Dish. Bring a Story. Bring a Piece of Yourself.

Food has always been one of the ways humans gather, connect, and build community. Stories are another.

Join us for a late afternoon shared meal and storytelling. Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share along with an object that holds personal meaning. It might be an old photograph, a family recipe, a handmade gift, a meaningful keepsake, or even a sex toy. It’s not about the object, it’s about the story behind it. Throughout our time together, we will take turns sharing why our chosen object is important to us and what it reveals about our lives, values, experiences, and journeys. As we continue our summer of self-study, this gathering offers an opportunity we all long for. To be seen. Not for what we do or accomplish but for what matters most to us.

WELLNESS AND BODYWORK AVAILABLE

We also provide wellness coaching and massage therapy at our downtown studio! If you need a reconnect and restoration with your body, we've got you. Whether you are seeking nervous system regulation, integration, or a moment to exhale, you will be met with care and intention.
